Vintage Motorsport’s Feb/March 2023 issue goes back through the decades

We’re looking back through the decades with the Feb/March 2023 Vintage Motorsport that’s mailing to subscribers and available to read in digital format.

It’s the first issue of 2023, and, as you’ll see, we’ve put it in the wind tunnel over the winter and it looks a little different. But what hasn’t changed is our ongoing mission to celebrate the rich history of motorsports and showcase the vibrant culture of the current historic racing scene. As it says on the cover, Vintage Motorsport is the journal of motor racing history, but connecting that with a thriving present is what we do – and long may that continue.

Over many years, Randy D. Riggs set the bar high on the experience Vintage Motorsport delivered its readers. And like everything in racing, the magazine is constantly evolving, but always with the goal of best serving our readers. Meanwhile, enjoy our look back at some epic motor racing stories in this “Through the Decades” themed issue.

Starting with 1993, we take a look at an Indy Car World Series season for the ages, when reigning Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell turned his back on grand prix racing and exploded on to the CART scene. Mansell supplied the drama and excitement as he took on the likes of Penske’s Emerson Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy and his Newman/Haas Racing teammate Mario Andretti and, of course, earned the title in a stunning debut season.

Rewinding to 1983, our cover star is the Gordon Murray-penned Brabham-BMW BT52, a flame-spitting dart conceived in mere weeks when Formula 1 banned ground-effect just before the ’83 season. But necessity is the mother of invention, and Murray conceived a championship-winning classic that still resonates with F1 fans today.

Heading back another decade, we follow the path that ended with 1973’s Porsche 917/30 Can-Am monster, a car that took racecar power outputs to unheard of levels and dominated the ’73 season in the hands of Mark Donohue.

And 1973 is also the year for this issue’s “My Favorite Race.” Jackie Stewart didn’t win the ’73 Italian Grand Prix, or even get on the podium, but he looks back on his charge through the field after an early puncture as his greatest day in a racecar.

Then we rewind to 1963 and Joe Weatherly’s astonishing NASCAR Grand National Division season, when the “Clown Prince of Racing” drove for nine different car owners, yet still took home the title. Tragically, he was killed early in the ’64 season, leaving us to wonder what might have been.

Bringing things back to the present, we’re also taking a look at the current vibrant state of historic F1 racing, checking out HSR’s Classic Daytona and Sebring events, paying visits to the Penske Racing Museum and Mountune USA, and discovering the incredible art of Terence Ross. Plus, we’re bringing you the latest news and happenings from the racing, concours and auction scenes.
