If you suspect your car might have transmission trouble, it’s wise to have it examined and repaired promptly. Any small problem in or around the gearbox can rapidly become something extremely expensive to fix. So if you notice any of the following five indications of trouble, visit your local Toyota dealer right away for transmission repair.
Leaking Transmission Fluid
Transmission fluid starts off reddish in color and fades to a brownish hue over time. It also tends to smell sweet, so if you spot a pool of sweet-smelling red or brown liquid when you pull away from parking, you almost certainly have a transmission fluid leak. This is a problem requiring immediate attention before your gearbox grinds to a halt, seizes up, and dies.
Why Is Transmission Fluid So Important?
With all the heat and pressure generated inside the transmission, the fluid is essential to keep the gears lubricated. The fluid also stops the gearbox from overheating. It cleans fragments of metal and other debris out of the mechanism and even prevents rust and other corrosion. As such, transmission fluid is one of the most important fluids in your car and a leak should be repaired with all haste.
Over time, transmission fluid naturally ages and degrades, thickening and filling with debris. If it isn’t replaced regularly with fresh fluid, it starts to become burnt by the relentless heat of the gearbox. You’ll even be able to catch this burning smell from inside the cabin above.
If you find that you’re no longer shifting smoothly between gears, then you’re experiencing gear slippage At its worst, your gears can even start to change by themselves as you drive.
This disconcerting problem might be caused by low fluid, rounded-out gears, torque converter trouble, a faulty solenoid, or something else. It will take a qualified mechanic to diagnose the problem and fix it.
Another rather scary, and fortunately rare, transmission problem is when the clutch fails. This occurs when an aging clutch can no longer engage or disengage smoothly. You’ll probably first notice this issue when putting your engine under greater pressure, such as on a steep incline. Needless to say, you should have it quickly seen to.
When a transmission goes awry because of low fluid or another problem, you’re likely to hear it. A struggling gearbox makes a lot of noise when you try to shift gears. If you hear awkward grinding sounds, you’ll need to visit a technician to diagnose the problem.
