Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara black off-road edition compact SUV rendered

Maruti Suzuki launched the Grand Vitara on the 26th of September 2022, and the compact SUV has managed to bag about 60,000 pre-bookings. The Grand Vitara, along with its badge-engineered sibling – the Toyota Hyryder – offers a best-in-segment all wheel drive layout on the 1.5 mild hybrid manual trims This makes the Maruti and Toyota compact SUVs the most capable vehicles in their segment. Taking cue from this, ace rendering artist Shoeb R Kalania has put together a speculative render of the Grand Vitara black off-road edition. Here, check it out.

As the render illustrates, the Maruti Grand Vitara black off-road edition is a blacked out version of the stock SUV, and this gives it a mean stance. Save for the Suzuki badge on the front grille, every other styling element has been given an all-black finish. In line with the Grand Vitara’s off road appeal, the tyres are meaty, all terrain units, and are shod over revised alloy wheels, which also seem heavier and off-road worthy. The finishing touch is a roof box that nicely complements the SUV’s go anywhere appeal.

The Maruti Grand Vitara’s all wheel drive unit offers Snow, Sport, Auto and Lock modes. Snow and Sport modes basically control the amount of traction control available while in all wheel drive mode. In lock mode, the Grand Vitara’s all wheel drive layout will channel torque to all four wheels. The Auto mode will result in the AWD channeling torque to the wheels that need the most traction when the situation demands while reverting back to front wheel drive mode when there’s no need for additional traction.

The all wheel drive feature is only available with the 1.5 liter-4 cylinder K15C petrol engine and 5 speed manual gearbox combination. This engine makes 102 Bhp-137 Nm, and gets DualJet (two injectors per cylinder) and dual VVT (variable valve timing for both inlet and exhaust valves) technologies. The mild hybrid unit, called Suzuki Hybrid Vehicle System (SHVS) assists the engine during acceleration, and also has brake energy regeneration to recharge the on-board battery. In non-AWD trim, the engine is also available with a 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox that drives the front wheels.

Maruti Suzuki also sells the Grand Vitara will a strong hybrid powertrain. The strong hybrid consists of a 1.5 liter, naturally aspirated petrol engine (91 Bhp-122 Nm) running on the Atkinson’s cycle, paired to an electric motor that’s good for 78 Bhp-141 Nm. Together, combined output is rated at 114 Bhp. The real selling points of this strong hybrid motor isn’t outright performance though. Rather, it’s a 28 Kmpl diesel-beating fuel efficiency number, and the all-electric mode on offer. In all-electric mode, the Grand Vitara can be driven purely on battery power for up to 25 Kms, and this is another segment-first feature. The strong hybrid powertrain gets a CVT automatic gearbox as standard.  Ex-showroom prices of the Grand Vitara start from Rs. 10.45 lakh while the all wheel drive trim prices start from Rs. 16.89 lakh. The Strong Hybrid variants of the SUV start from Rs. 17.99 lakh.
