Lamborghini Urus S Bumped To 666 HP Without Using Electrification

The new entry-level Lamborghini Urus S is now as powerful as the Performante, though without the weight reduction and handling upgrade.

The Urus Performante was an exciting entry from Lamborghini; released last month, the higher-performance model arrived to compete directly with the Aston Martin DBX 707. However, Lamborghini didn’t wait long to put the powertrain in the entry-level model, now named Urus S. The SUV follows all Lambo supercars from the past with iterative upgrades and even adopts the same naming scheme. So, goodbye Urus, hello Urus S.

Unlike the Performante, the Urus S will be a more toned-down version — a more street-friendly version for the general public. It’s still a beast, though — the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 now pumps devilish 666 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque.

With the quick-shifting eight-speed automatic, the powertrain can launch the Urus S from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds and to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 12.5 seconds. The top speed is rated at 190 mph (305 km/h). Lamborghini also brags about a 62-0 mph (100-0 km/h) braking distance of just 33.7 meters (110.5 ft), which is impressive for a massive SUV.

But despite packing the same amount of power, the Performante is quicker — it only needs 3.3 seconds to reach 62 mph, a result of the 104 lbs (47 kg) lower weight.

Furthermore, in place of Performante’s steel springs, the Urus S gets a new air suspension. Hence, the Urus S should be less agile but much more comfortable. Still, the driver can choose between three modes — Street, Track, and Off-Road.

While the Urus S and the Performante are similar in many ways, there are some noticeable differences in their appearance. The S has a more refined front bumper and, overall, more subdued looks. Other exterior improvements include an updated rear bumper with a new twin-tailpipe design. As expected, customers will have a plethora of personalization options, including glossy colors and carbon fiber inserts.

Gloss and matte customizations are also available for the stainless-steel rear skidplate and carbon fiber body parts. Meanwhile, the stock wheels are 21-inch, but you can opt for customized titanium 22-inch ones or a diamond bronze 23-inch set.

The Urus S might be the last entry-level model in the lineup with a pure internal-combustion powertrain; Lamborghini promised to offer only electrified models by 2024, so a plug-in hybrid Urus is almost a certainty at this point.

Although Lamborghini didn’t provide any pricing details, we expect the Urus S to be more expensive than its predecessor, which starts just shy of $230,000.
