The Ford P144C trouble code means you have a “Evaporative emission system Purge Check Valve Performance” issue.

The PCM performs an EVAP check valve test when the engine is running under minimal boost conditions. The test is performed once every drive cycle and only when entry conditions are met.

The Ford P144C sets when fuel tank pressure exceeds a calibrated amount within a specified amount of time during the test. The cause of the P144C code can be:

• Restricted EVAP ejector connections at the intake air system
• Stuck open EVAP check valve
• Stuck closed EVAP check valve
• Damaged EVAP ejector
• Damaged EVAP check valve

Ford TSB 12-8-23

Ford has issued TSB 12-8-23 to address a P144C issue on the vehicles listed below. In addition to the trouble code, you may see a “check fuel cap message” on your dash.

The TSB 12-8-23 states that 2013 Escape vehicles built on or before 7/18/2012 and equipped with a 1.6L or 2.0L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engine may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P144C stored in PCM memory.

The problem may be caused by an evaporative emissions vapor ejector installed backwards and/or a blocked vapor purge line port in the air cleaner outlet pipe assembly.

2016 Escape 1.6
2014 Escape 2.0

What to check first

• First clean the fuel filler flap.

• If the problem remains, test the canister purge solenoid.

Locate the purge solenoid valve. Toggle power and ground to the purge solenoid while applying vacuum with a handheld vacuum pump. If the solenoid valve doesn’t open and allow airflow or leaks when closed, replace the valve.
