2023 Polestar 4 Midsize SUV Detailed

The Polestar brand is starting to detail its future product plans. These plans now include three new SUVs, but two of the SUVs have been mostly a mystery until now. New details confirm at least one of these new SUVs will be a more affordable midsize SUV option.

It has been known for awhile now that Polestar’s next new product will be in SUV. The Polestar 3 is slated to launch in 2022 and be positioned as a premium midsize SUV offering. In fact, Polestar is drawing analogs between the 3 and an electrified Porsche Cayenne; both in terms of size and luxury performance.

The Polestar 3 will be based on Volvo’s SPA2 architecture and be a platform mate with the next-generation Volvo XC-90. Despite the similar bones, Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath tells AutoCar it will share nothing in terms of design with its Volvo cousin. Ingenlath also says the 3 will have “incredible power.”

While the upcoming 3 is aiming for the high-end of the market, the Polestar 4 that will follow it will aim for affordability. Ingenlath says the 4 will be priced under the 3 and have a smaller physical footprint versus the 3. However, the executive asserts the 4 will have just as much interior space as the 3 and will be focused on accessibility. Basically it sounds like the Polestar 4 will have a similar market strategy to the Polestar 2; focused on mainstream appeal.

This description seems to suggest the Polestar 4 will be Polestar’s equivalent to the Volvo C40 Recharge. This CMA architecture based SUV features Volvo’s 402 horsepower EV powertrain. Ingenlath says the Polestar 3 and 4 will both share a Volvo EV powertrain.

After the Polestar 4 launch sometime in 2023, Polestar will grow its portfolio further with the Polestar 5. The Polestar 5 is expected to be a production version of the Percept Concept the brand previewed last year. It is expected to launch in 2024.
