McLaren CEO Zak Brown has outlined the reasons why the team have opted for a fresh new look for 2022, as the British squad unveiled a strikingly different looking MCL36 at their launch event in the UK.
McLaren became the fourth F1 team to reveal their 2022 look, hosting a spectacular launch event on Friday that had race drivers Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo peel the covers from the new machine.
The 2022 car is set to run a livery that’s similar to last year’s one-off Gulf livery from the Monaco Grand Prix, Brown confirmed that there hadn’t been a sponsorship reason for the change.
“Gulf haven’t increased their commitment to us,” Brown told select members of the media, including RacingNews365.com at the car launch.
2022 livery has “speed and elegance to it”
With McLaren moving away from their traditional silver and black colour scheme at the end of 2016, Brown said the new livery reflected the positive reactions they got from fans during the course of the ’21 season.
“We’ve been involved in our livery since we’ve gone back to papaya,” he said.
“We wanted something that was very vibrant and [we] changed the shade of our papayas and it’s a darker blue.
“I think the livery changes that we did last year, both in Monaco and in Abu Dhabi, we had a lot of great fan reaction and they liked to see a lot of energy.
“I think [this has] got some speed and elegance to it that we thought would go on top of the fast race car that, hopefully, we’ve designed this year.
“So it’s just a natural evolution and then try to make sure we give all of our corporate partners a good standing on the car.”
