The Skoda Slavia is coming to the Indian car market as a replacement for the Rapid, which had a moderately successful decade-long run in India. The model will arrive as Skoda’s most affordable model in its modern-day lineup for India. Like all the other new-generation models from Skoda, it will come as a petrol-only model.

Skoda has already removed the Rapid from the official website. The all-new Slavia is based on the MQB-A0-IN platform that also underpins the Skoda Kushaq in the Indian market. The Slavia will become the third car after the Kushaq and the Taigun to utilise the India-spec platform.

The Skoda Slavia will be offered with two engine options – a 1.0-litre three-cylinder TSI petrol engine, which makes 115 PS of power and 175 Nm of torque, and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine, which produces 150 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque.

Apart from the 6-speed manual gearbox, which is standard for both the engine options, while the 1.0-litre engine will be available with a 6-speed torque converter, the 1.5-litre engine will also be offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Features list will be similar to Kushaq

In its top-spec form, the new Skoda Slavia will get features like LED headlamps and tail lamps, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, leather upholstery, full-TFT instrument console, automatic climate control, 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ventilated front seats, wireless charger, push start-stop button, rear AC vents and more. The Slavia is coming in as a direct alternative to cars like Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.

The all-new Slavia will arrive in the Indian market at a time when the popularity of the sedans is going down drastically. The market is shifting towards the crossovers and compact SUVs. Bringing a sedan to the market at this point seems to be a calculated decision.

Interestingly, Volkswagen will bring the all-new Virtus based on the same platform. The Virtus and Slavia will share the same Kushaq-Taigun relationship in the market. Both the cars will be very similar to each other but there will be major differences as well. Skoda plans to bring a slew of new cars to the Indian market and increase its market share as well.
