Williams junior O’Sullivan wins prize Aston Martin F1 test

Last week it was announced that O’Sullivan, who took seven wins and 14 podiums from 24 races on his way to clinching the GB3 (formerly British Formula 3 Championship) title in 2021, had been signed to Williams’ Driver Academy.

The 17-year-old British driver has also been confirmed as graduating to the F1-supporting Formula 3 championship this season with Carlin.

A brilliant few days continued for O’Sullivan on Sunday evening when he scooped up the 2021 Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year award.

O’Sullivan has earned a test in one of Aston Martin’s F1 cars, £200,000, a full membership to the BRDC and an Arai crash helmet for winning the prestigious award.

He beat fellow finalists Ollie Bearman, Jonny Edgar and Louis Foster following a two-day shoot-out at Silverstone and extensive fitness tests.

“I went into this evening with no expectations, I was a bit nervous, and I didn’t eat much, but it is amazing to win it,” said O’Sullivan.

“I had a good idea I thought I’d been quite fast at the test, especially in the F2 ‘race’ run. I’m really looking forward to the F1 test. Hopefully after a year in F3 my neck will hold up. It’ll be great to be able to say I’ve driven an F1 car.”

Previous winners of the award include current F1 drivers George Russell and Lando Norris.

Alongside contesting his rookie F3 season in 2022, O’Sullivan will be involved in simulator work and car development with Williams, both trackside and at its Grove headquarters in the UK.
